Salvation Army Angel Tree delivers 20,000 toys to nearly 5,000 Sacramento children
The Salvation Army says the program has helped brighten the holidays for millions of families nationwide over the past four decades.
SUBSTATION, BUT NOTHING HAS BEEN FINALIZED. HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, THOUSANDS OF LOCAL FAMILIES ARE GETTING A LITTLE EXTRA HELP JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS. SO AROUND 20,000 TOYS GOING TO 5000 BABIES THROUGHOUT SACRAMENTO COUNTY. THAT WOULD BE ABOUT 2000 FAMILIES ALL GRABBING A BAG. WHY WILL THE SALVATION ARMY IS PROVIDING A LOT OF HOLIDAY CHEER TODAY HERE AT CAL EXPO, MAJOR JAN PEMBERTON, YOU JOIN ME LIVE THIS MORNING AND WE HAVE THE BEST TASK THIS MORNING. OKAY, WHAT ARE WE DOING? WE ARE GOING TO SHOP FOR THIS LITTLE GUY. WE ARE GOING TO SHOP AT ABOUT FUN THINGS. AND I KNOW THAT IT’S A THREE YEAR OLD BOY AND I KNOW THEY LOVE PAW PATROL. PAW PATROL. SO, YOU KNOW, IT’S A HELICOPTER TO FIRE RESCUE. THAT’S RIGHT. YOU GOT TO ADORABLENESS. WE WERE LIKE PERUSING ALL OF THESE ADORABLE TOYS. ALL BECAUSE OF DONATIONS AND THE GIVING NATURE OF OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY. IT’S REALLY HARD TO, LIKE, DECIDE, BECAUSE ALL OF THIS, LIKE, BRINGS YOU BACK TO CHILDHOOD. I MEAN, WHO HASN’T PLAYED THIS GAME? IT’S GONE BY MANY NAMES OVER THE YEARS. YOU GUYS REMEMBER TOYS R US SOME VERY MUCH. DATING MYSELF IS A 90S BABY. OKAY, SO TALK TO ME ABOUT HOW MUCH WORK GOES INTO MAKING THIS POSSIBLE. OH, ERIN. SO MUCH WORK GOES INTO THIS. IT’S NOT JUST ONE WEEK, ONE DAY THING. IT’S A WHOLE MONTH OF DECEMBER. AND ACTUALLY WE START IN OCTOBER WITH THE INTAKE AND GETTING REFERRALS FROM FAMILIES. AND WE START WITH THE VOLUNTEERS. IT TAKES VOLUNTEERS. IT TAKES AN ARMY OF PEOPLE TO DO THIS WONDERFUL PROJECT FOR OUR FAMILIES. AND TALK TO ME ABOUT HANDING THIS OVER TO FAMILIES, BECAUSE YOU’RE PROVIDING ALSO A MEAL AND A TREE. ABSOLUTELY. THEY NOT ONLY GET GIFTS THAT WE ALSO HAVE FOOD BOXES AVAILABLE, AND THEY ALSO GET A PROTEIN, EITHER TURKEY OR CHICKEN. EITHER ONE. OR IN ANY CASE, IF WE CAN, WE DO BOTH. BUT I LOVE IT. AND THEY GET THAT. AND WE ARE PARTNERING WITH CALIFORNIA BACKYARD WHO GIVES US THE ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREES. SO IF THEY ARE IN NEED OF A TREE THEY CAN TAKE THAT, GO HOME, SET IT UP AND REALLY HAVE A GOOD CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE ALL AROUND. AMAZING. OKAY, WAIT, WE CAN’T FORGET SPIDEY. SPIDEY WAS OVER HERE. YEP. OKAY, SPIDEY IS GOING IN THE BAG FOR THIS SWEET LITTLE THREE YEAR OLD LITTLE BOY. 100. THANK YOU. JAN. APPRECIATE YOU. OH, ABSOLUTELY. THANK YOU. ERIN. THANK YOU FOR HAVING US. Christmas joy is arriving early for thousands of Sacramento-area families as The Salvation Army distributes more than 20,000 toys to nearly 5,000 children through its annual Angel Tree program.Now a holiday tradition dating back to 1979, Angel Tree connects children and families in need with community donors who purchase and donate gifts during the Christmas season. The Salvation Army says the program has helped brighten the holidays for millions of families nationwide over the past four decades.This year’s Sacramento distribution takes place Thursday at Cal Expo, with families receiving assistance through a coordinated drive-through system. About 100 Salvation Army officers and volunteers will serve pre-registered households as vehicles move through the distribution route.In addition to toys, each family will receive a full Christmas meal with all the fixings and have the opportunity to take home a Christmas tree, helping families create a festive holiday at home.
